The Team Behind AI Lawyer Launches Referent, AI-Native Practice Management Software for Solo and Small Law Firms, Supported by Findings from the Small-Firm Legal Operations Report 2026

Radom, Poland -- The team behind AI Lawyer, the consumer legal AI platform with more than 300,000 registered users, today announced the launch of Referent, an AI-native practice management platform designed specifically for solo practitioners and small law firms. The product launch is informed by findings from the Small-Firm Legal Operations Report 2026, a survey of 532 legal professionals examining operational challenges facing smaller legal practices.

According to the Small-Firm Legal Operations Report 2026, 89% of respondents reported losing at least five hours each week to non-billable administrative work, while one in four reported losing more than 15 hours per week. The survey also identified client intake as the stage most susceptible to administrative errors, cited by 43% of respondents. Combined with matter opening, pre-matter activities accounted for 63% of reported workflow errors.

Referent was developed to address these operational challenges by streamlining client intake and practice management. After connecting an email inbox, the platform identifies potential legal matters and presents them in a review queue where users can approve or dismiss draft matters before they are added to the firm's workspace. Once approved, matters include associated clients, emails, documents, tasks, deadlines, and time records within a centralized environment.

Industry research indicates growing adoption of artificial intelligence across the legal profession. Clio's Legal Trends Report reported AI adoption increasing from 19% in 2023 to 79% in 2024. In addition, Clio's 2025 report found that approximately one-third of solo and small firms experienced revenue growth following AI adoption. The Small-Firm Legal Operations Report 2026 provides additional context specific to solo and small firms, finding that 54% of surveyed respondents currently use AI in their practice. Among survey participants, 8% of AI users reported losing more than 15 administrative hours per week compared with 45% of non-users. These findings describe an observed association and do not establish causation.

Survey respondents also identified fragmented information systems as a significant operational challenge. Twenty-nine percent cited information dispersed across multiple software platforms as their primary workflow issue, while 25% identified AI tools that lack persistent knowledge of firm matters as a key limitation. These findings informed Referent's product design, which focuses on consolidating firm information into a unified workspace.

The development of Referent followed insights gathered through the growth of AI Lawyer, where more than 300,000 registered users have accessed legal AI services. Of the 56,611 users who voluntarily identified their professional role during onboarding, 20.8% identified themselves as legal professionals. Based on this finding, the company conducted interviews with practicing attorneys over a three-year period and used those interviews to inform the survey research presented in the Small-Firm Legal Operations Report 2026.

Referent includes capabilities aligned with the operational priorities identified during that research, including centralized matter management, email-based client intake, scheduling with court and docket information, Google Calendar synchronization, integrated time tracking, firm-wide search, and AI-assisted workflow support with lawyer approval for client-facing actions.

The Small-Firm Legal Operations Report 2026 is based on an online survey of 532 legal professionals recruited from AI Lawyer users between January 2024 and July 2026. Respondents included 63% solo practitioners and 27% attorneys from firms with two to five lawyers. Seventy-three percent of respondents were based in the United States. The reported margin of error is ±4.2% at the 95% confidence level.

Platform statistics are derived from aggregated and anonymized onboarding responses. Of 331,690 registered users, 56,611 voluntarily answered the optional professional role question. The complete methodology, limitations, and supporting data tables are available through the research publication.
