SOUTH AFRICA — As AI-powered search assistants continue reshaping how consumers and businesses discover products and services online, digital marketing agencies are beginning to adapt their strategies beyond traditional search engine optimization (SEO).
According to observations gathered over the past 12 months by MO Agency, an international digital marketing agency serving enterprise and growth-led companies, AI-driven recommendation systems are changing how businesses appear in search-related conversations across platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini.
“The shift is no longer just about ranking on a search engine results page,” said Luke Marthinusen, founder and CEO of MO Agency. “Businesses increasingly need to understand how AI systems interpret credibility, authority, and recommendations across multiple data sources.”
Historically, SEO strategies focused on improving rankings among traditional search engine listings. However, AI assistants often provide users with only a limited number of recommendations, reducing the visibility opportunities previously available through standard search rankings.
MO Agency said internal client audits and testing across multiple industries have identified several emerging patterns in AI visibility performance. Among the findings:
The company noted that its findings are based on internal analysis and ongoing campaign observations and may vary depending on industry, geography, and platform behavior.
One challenge identified by the agency involves what it describes as a “prompt language gap,” where customer search behavior differs significantly from traditional marketing terminology.
For example, businesses may optimize for phrases such as “best CRM implementation partner,” while potential buyers instead ask conversational questions related to pricing, migration concerns, or operational pain points.
To address this, the agency said it increasingly analyzes customer support tickets, sales call transcripts, online community discussions, and real-world buyer language when developing AI visibility strategies.
MO Agency outlined several recommendations for businesses evaluating their current AI search presence over the next 90 days, including:
Industry analysts have also projected continued growth in AI-assisted purchasing behavior. Research and consulting firm Gartner has forecast increased use of AI agents in both B2B and B2C decision-making processes over the next several years.
“If businesses wait until AI visibility becomes fully measurable through traditional analytics tools, they may already be behind,” Marthinusen said. “The shift is already influencing how potential customers discover and evaluate companies online.”
MO Agency provides digital marketing and AI visibility services for businesses across multiple sectors internationally.
