Palm Pictures Expands Into Scripted Features as Emmy-Nominated Documentary Garners Global Acclaim

By Avneet Singh | Date: 17/06/2025

Palm Pictures, headquartered in London, produces feature‑length documentaries and motion pictures for global release, focusing on underreported international stories. Specialising in executive and creative development, archival and line‑producing services, it operates across London, New York, Lisbon, Copenhagen, Prague, and Kyiv. The company has an Emmy, Sundance, and PGA‑nominated portfolio, with films shown on platforms such as Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon, PBS, CBC, BBC, NHK, and at major festivals

London, UK - Palm Pictures has announced its official expansion into scripted feature films, marking a new chapter for the company best known for its award-winning documentaries. The production house, which operates across the US and Europe, will also now offer executive producer services and creative development support to outside productions in addition to its in-house projects. As part of this expansion, Palm Pictures currently has three scripted features in development.

The move into scripted content coincides with growing recognition for the company’s latest documentary, WHO’S AFRAID OF NATHAN LAW?, which has been nominated for an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary category.

The film, which aired on POV (PBS) in the United States, explores the life of Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Nathan Law and the broader struggle for democratic freedoms in the region.

Produced by Matthew Torne, the documentary has received critical acclaim for its urgency and emotional depth. It follows on from Torne’s earlier success at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where JOSHUA: TEENAGER VS. SUPERPOWER won the audience award and was acquired by Netflix as a Netflix Original. That film was also nominated for a Producers Guild of America award.

“Branching into scripted features is a natural progression for Palm Pictures,” says Matthew Torne, the company’s creative director. “We’ve built a reputation for telling politically charged, emotionally driven stories in the documentary space, and we’re excited to bring that same creative lens to narrative film. At the same time, our expanded executive producer services will allow us to support more filmmakers with a shared commitment to compelling storytelling,” he adds.

Palm Pictures’ development slate represents a broadening of its creative focus while remaining rooted in global issues. The company continues to work closely with international partners and broadcasters and has just wrapped production on a multi-part documentary series filmed in ten countries, including war-torn Ukraine.

This latest growth phase positions Palm Pictures as a hybrid powerhouse in both documentary and scripted media. With its Emmy nomination and a growing network of collaborators, the company is looking ahead to its next slate of international co-productions across both factual and fictional genres.
