Can you share your journey in the eCommerce and marketplaces space?
It’s been an incredible journey. I began my career in 2010, launching my own eCommerce startup, Jumadi.in, where I got my first taste of business development. However, it was in 2015, when I transitioned into Product Management at Cleartrip, that my passion for user experience and innovation really took shape. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with major companies like Tesco, where I played a key role in revamping their iconic Clubcard program and launched their Retail Platform APIs. More recently, at Fine and Rare in London, I helped transform their B2C and B2B marketplaces, integrating advanced pricing algorithms powered by blockchain technology. I also worked on enhancing their customer portfolio with real-time value showcases, a feature that’s especially valuable for wine investors. My focus throughout has been on creating seamless pre-purchase and post-purchase experiences, blending innovation with practical solutions that drive growth and satisfaction.
What’s your approach to balancing value creation for both businesses and consumers?
It always starts with understanding the customer journey. At Fine and Rare, for example, our revamp of the marketplace was all about simplifying the experience for both high-end collectors and casual buyers. Whether it’s at Fine and Rare, Tesco, or Cleartrip, the goal is to create solutions that benefit customers while driving business growth. It’s all about creating a win-win situation—making the user’s experience seamless and rewarding while ensuring it aligns with business objectives.
Can you talk about your current role at Fundsinn.com and how it aligns with your vision for eCommerce?
At Fundsinn.com, as Head of Product & Technology, my focus is on building a sophisticated marketplace for financial products such as mutual funds, debt funds, and sovereign gold bonds, targeting a broad customer base both in India and internationally. My core responsibilities include automating KYC processes and regulatory compliance, as well as implementing an AI and ML-powered recommendation engine that tailor’s financial products to each user. This creates an exciting opportunity to open up the Indian financial market to international customers, all while staying within RBI and SEBI guidelines. Drawing from my experience in eCommerce and marketplaces, I’m bringing that same user-centric approach to financial services, aiming to make them intuitive and easy to navigate. By streamlining transactions and offering a wide range of financial products, we're working towards a seamless and frictionless experience. Since I’ve mentored Fundsinn before, I already have a deep understanding of the business and the team, which puts me in a great position to drive even greater value and success through my expertise.
Given your extensive experience mentoring startups throughout your career, are you currently exploring any new startup ventures or opportunities?
Startup mentoring has always been close to my heart, and at my core, I’m an entrepreneur. Right now, I’m developing a SaaS solution focused on recommendation-as-a-service, leveraging LLM models available in the market. The platform enables users to build their own Small Learning Models (SLM), but with a twist—we're incorporating human expertise alongside the automation. While most recommendation engines are fully automated, we’re adding that crucial layer of human intervention to deliver more personalized and accurate recommendations.
How do you see this SaaS solution changing the market?
The key differentiator is the human intervention component. While AI and machine learning are incredibly powerful, the inclusion of human expertise can greatly improve the accuracy of recommendations. We’re offering businesses more control over their recommendation systems, which is critical in areas like eCommerce, finance, and healthcare. It’s about delivering personalized results that businesses can trust and adapt according to their specific needs.
What’s your outlook on the future of eCommerce?
I believe the future will be heavily driven by hyper-personalization and AI, but with a human element still playing a crucial role. Consumers are looking for more tailored experiences, whether it’s in product recommendations or post-purchase support. At the same time, businesses are leveraging data more than ever to make informed decisions. The key will be blending automation with human oversight, creating systems that are intelligent but adaptable. I think our SaaS platform fits right into this future.
What advice would you give to those looking to make an impact in digital marketplaces?
Stay curious and adaptable. The landscape is always evolving, and the ability to learn quickly and apply new technologies is key. Focus on solving real customer problems, and don’t shy away from experimentation. Trends come and go, but the value lies in understanding the customer and building solutions that meet their needs. I'm always open for a quick chat to discuss or plan a mentorship session. Feel free to connect with me or drop a message on LinkedIn!
