Former Investment Banker Felix Prehn Launches Goat Academy, a Complimentary Financial Education Platform for Veterans and Active Service Members

By mawrazafar | Date: 01/10/2024

Felix Prehn, a former investment banker whose mission is to help people through financial literacy, has initiated Goat Academy—a financial learning center signature in the military that gave itself the only free membership. The main goal of this initiative is to provide those people who have fought for the country with all the systems and information they need for their finances in the long run.

In a statement, Mr. Prehn explained how Goat Academy was born. While traveling, he met John, a Black Hawk medivac pilot who disclosed that wealth managers swindled many soldiers. The dialogue exposed the massive gap between the wealth education Mr. Prehn received and the lack thereof for the service members.

"I learned through experience that complex financial strategies are something I can afford to invest in while many veterans are still undergoing basic financial education," Mr. Prehn told me. "It didn't sit right with me that these brave individuals, who risk everything for our country, could be so easily taken advantage of financially."

Goat Academy offers a free financial education syllabus that can be easily accessed from its website. The curriculum was developed with the advice of Mr. Prehn, who has extensive experience in the finance sector. Thus, it covers fundamental budgeting skills to advanced investment strategies. The program is interactive, not theoretical, and is perfect for entry-level students who try to break through the often dense jungle of financial jargon.

"We want to practice simple methods verified by past merchandise successes," Mr. Prehn explained. "We are not satisfied with teaching them how to save and budget. We are the ones to show them how to choose solid companies or index funds and the benefits of doing so in the long run”.

His initial mishaps in the investment industry impacted Mr. Prehn's work process. At 18, he put $10,000 into biotech funds on his own without proper guidance, resulting in significant losses. Through this stabbing event, he learned the importance of trustworthy information and precise strategy in the investment.

"I've experienced the pain of losing significant money due to the lack of knowledge. That's what made me the most advocate of the accessible financial education approach," he mentioned. "I don't want other people to go through the same experience as I did.

Besides hardly numbers and graphs, Goat Academy goes into the more empathetic side of investing. Mr. Prehn not only highlights the emotional tension caused by market volatility but also tries to impart the veterans with the knowledge and psychological skills to trade financial markets confidently.

"Financial freedom is not only gaining wealth," he said. "It's about creating the life you desire. In my case, this involves immersing myself in the world of animal rescue dogs. We aim to help veterans use money as a tool for happiness rather than making it a source of stress."

Before forming Goat Academy, Mr. Prehn had a very successful career in the investment banking sector. He started his career at a reputable Wall Street company, where he was involved in mergers and acquisitions and debt and equity financing across different industry sectors. His professional skills include operating systems, business services, and the fintech sector.

Over the years, Mr. Prehn has built his knowledge of financial markets and investment strategies, allowing him to give others valuable advice. However, his transfer from Wall Street to the humanitarian sector stood as the most eloquent example of his philanthropic feelings.

"Leaving a lucrative job is no easy decision, but I felt a strong pull to make an important impact," Mr. Prehn said. "Our military personnel have given up so much; informing them about finance is the least we can do."

Goat Academy intends to fill the financial literacy void among veterans and active service members. The platform seeks to give individuals the power of economic freedom, meaning they can make decisions that will lead to them and their families being financially stable for a long time.

The platform has collected positive feedback from the early users, who believe that the straightforward, no-nonsense approach to financial education is a better choice. The good reviews exclusively articulate the connection of the class to complex economic concepts, applications to day-to-day life.
