Anthony Torre: Perth Local Nurturing a Passion for Boating from Childhood

By GLP Lawyers International | Date: 06/04/2024

Perth local Anthony Torre's journey into the world of boating was an unexpected yet transformative one, shaped by familial ties and a deep-rooted passion instilled at a young age. Born into a family where boating wasn't the norm, his cousin Anthony, a father of three daughters, became the catalyst for igniting Anthony's passion for the open waters. Despite his father not being an avid boater, Anthony's cousin leaned on him as the trusted power behind his boating adventures. The Torre family's holiday house in Rockingham became the backdrop for Anthony's introduction to the world of boats and maritime adventures.

At the age of 16, Anthony's father gifted him his first boat, an act that marked the beginning of his personal journey on the water. His father would dutifully drive him to the ramp, patiently waiting for his return—a gesture that nurtured Anthony's growing enthusiasm for boating.

By the time he turned 17, Anthony ventured into water skiing, acquiring an 18-foot Barron 6 Sportsman. During the summer months, the boat became his frequent companion, taking to the waters three to four times a week, honing his skills and fostering a deep connection to the boating world. In 2004, Anthony purchased his current boat, a vessel designed for both diving and fishing. However, a shift in perspective arose from an unforeseen event—an incident involving a shark attack at Rottnest Island.

This incident prompted a change in Anthony's initial plans for diving with his children. Instead, he shifted gears to pulling pots, channelling his passion into a safer boating activity.

Anthony Torre now shares his insights and tips for those venturing into the world of boating:

1. Just Dive In: Try boating—let the experience guide you.

2. Understanding Costs: Boating typically incurs maintenance costs between 10%-15% of the boat's value annually.

3. Right-Sizing the Boat: Starting with a smaller boat and gradually moving up helps gain invaluable experience.

4. License Matters: Consider obtaining a skipper's ticket to operate boats safely and responsibly.

5. Experience Matters: Starting small allows for gradual skill development, preventing mishaps often associated with larger boats.

His advice stems from personal experience, emphasising the need for a gradual progression into the boating world and the importance of responsible boating practices. Anthony Torre's journey serves as a testament to how a seemingly unexpected passion can evolve into a lifelong pursuit. His advice aims to guide and inspire newcomers, encouraging a love for boating while fostering a culture of safety and responsibility on the water.
